ADHD Coaching - Why?

It’s a fair enough comment. Why should you bother with ADHD coaching? We live in a world where you can go on YouTube right now and get 5,000 talks, interviews, video podcasts, wacky two-person skits, whatever trying to “educate” you on ADHD and tell you how it can be your “superpower”. In a sense, this is great - it destigmatises something that has been the port wine birthmark of neurodiversity for so long.

But, on the other hand, allow me to use a metaphor. At some point in your life, you will have woken up at 3am with a throbbing toothache. And there’s nothing that can stop it, painkillers don’t touch the side, breathing exercises are coming up dead, turning on the reading light and spending 30 minutes with your latest tome isn’t helping. So you get the phone out, go on YouTube, search for “instant relief toothache free” and... it doesn’t really do anything. It’s some American bredda with tips about how to hold your head, where to position a pillow... maybe his advice is “don’t get tooth decay in the first place”, which is not what you need to hear at 4:07am when you have work the next day and all that’s on the TV is infomercials and shows where customs officers bully tourists. It might offer brief help, it might not, but what you really need is a professional the next day to talk to.

And that’s what ADHD coaches are. We’re the dentist, hygienist and nurse for your mind. While you can pick up brief tips online, they’re not personalised - they’re generic. We can relate - we’re all trying to cope with the same condition. And as with tooth pain, your ADHD can be both the cause and the symptom of a lot of issues in your life. Sometimes you need £3k of dental surgery with drills and cracking of bones. Sometimes you need to just be reminded to floss a bit more often. And there’s a lot of staging points in between. Same with ADHD. Sometimes we’re here to coach you through the biggest, most important steps of your life. Sometimes you just need coaching to put a stamp on that letter that’s been sitting on your desk for two weeks. No judgment. We understand. We can help. And I’m damned if we can let any anti-ADHD mindset in the wider world win.
